Course Introduction

For students starting Year 2 in September 2026.

This intensive course is designed to get students ready for the Autumn term – a crucial time immediately before entrance exams, which for most schools will take place in November and December.

Course Schedule

The course will cover all four subject areas – English, maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning.  The course is suitable for students preparing for entrance exams to academically competitive schools, such as St. Paul’s Juniors, King’s College and Westminster Under.

On Day I – we will cover English.  We will review different types of text, non-fiction media (commonly seen on St. Paul’s 7+) and dictation.  We will finish with a timed assessment.

On Day II – we will cover Verbal Reasoning.  We will look at both quantitative and vocabularly-based verbal reasoning.  We will finish with a short exercise in CEM format, suitable for St. Paul’s Juniors and Westminster.

On Day III – we will cover Non-Verbal reasoning.  WE will cover both 2D and 3D NVR, including common question types featured on last year’s 7+ and 8+ exams.  We will finish with a comprehensive NVR assessment.

On Day IV – we will cover maths.  We will look at common 7+ and 8+ topics, certain to come up, such as time, money, fractions up to one half and one quarter, measures and verbal problems.  We will finish with a maths assessment, comparable to the latter third of entrance exam papers.

On our final day – we will finish with an assessment.  We will take this in stages, and it will cover all topics and subjects tested at major academic junior schools – suitable for St. Paul’s Juniors, Westminster Under and King’s College Junior School.  Comprehensive feedback, with topics and targeted recommendations, will be sent shortly after the assessment.

The group will be supported by a lively learning game!  Students will earn points which they can use to buy prizes and can redeem these each day or amass points to save up for a grand prize!

“We have accepted a place at St Paul’s next year. Thank you for all the help throughout last year. You saved us!”

Group Leads

Dr Tom Parkinson

Tom is Winterwood’s co-founder and overseas the entrance exam cohort.  Tom has been running educational groups for the past decade, and has created several bespoke learning games which he uses in his group classes.  Tom has found that group courses really drive attainment – possible due to the nature of the groups, which are supportive and provide guidance and reassurance, and possible as gameplay is incorporated, which helps to mitigate stress and makes learning fun.  Either way, it works!

Laurie Coldwell

With over 13 years of experience at the highest level, Laurie has established himself as one of the top providers of bespoke private tuition. He has an enviable success rate in achieving school places, with over 95% of his students gaining places at one of their chosen schools. A consummate all-rounder, he has taken pupils from the 7+ right
through to acing the Eton List test; he has helped candidates vault multiple grade boundaries at GCSE, as well as coaching and reassuring nervous prospective undergraduates for their Oxbridge interviews.

Oliver Ford

Oliver has helped students gain places at schools such as Westminster, St. Paul’s, Highgate, UCS and City of London School Boys, alongside helping them achieve prestigious scholarships at schools like Eton. Oliver has well over 5,000 hours of tutoring experience.  His teaching style is patient and encouraging, he makes learning fun and creates dynamic resources which contextualise learning within topics that his students require for exams.

Our Cancellation Policy

If you cancel less than two weeks ahead of the start date of the course, the fee is non-refundable and non-transferable to another date or another student.

If you cancel outside of the two week course date, we will happily credit your account to attend a future course.

If you do not show up for a course, you are not eligible for a credit or refund.

Why we charge a cancellation fee

This is to cover the tutors’ reserved time to run a group course, to pay for their time spent pre-planning the class and relevant material, printing fees incurred and the loss of revenue to Winterwood as it is often too late to fill a cancelled space.  More importantly, other students miss out on attending a group.
