Course Introduction

Students starting Year 6, September 2025

This essential course is designed to get year six students ready for the autumn term – a crucial time immediately before entrance exams, which for most schools will take place in November and December.

Over the four-days we will cover all four subject areas – English, maths verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.  It is suitable for students preparing for the Consortium exam, ISEB Pretest, and written entrance exams.

Course Schedule

  • On Day I – we will cover English.  We will review different types of texts, multiple choice comprehension, literary analysis and conclude with a short ISEB/Consortium format comprehension exercise, with a composition exercise designed to look ahead to written exams.
  • On Day II – we will cover verbal reasoning.  We will look at both quantitative and vocabulary-based verbal reasoning.  We will finish with a short exercise in CEM format, for the ISEB, Consortium exam and St Paul’s Girl’s and City of London pretest.
  • On Day III – we will cover non-verbal reasoning.  We will cover both 2D and 3D NVR, including difficult rules such as cube nets, counting cubes, and rotation of cubes.  We will finish with a comprehensive NVR assessment.
  • On Day IV – we will cover maths.  We will look at common entrance exam questions, involving data, geometry, time, money, measures and fractions.  We will finish with an assessment in ISEB/Consortium format, including a maths puzzle section for the Consortium and second stage exams.

The group will be supported by a lively learning game, Victorian Zoo Baron!  Students will earn points which they can use to buy prizes and can redeem these each day or amass points to save up for a grand prize!

“Winterwood tutors are highly recommended. Their group sessions are perfect for boosting knowledge in the key areas, while kids enjoy the competitive environment. Their tutors are very keen and productive!”

Group Leads

Dr Tom Parkinson

Tom is Winterwood’s co-founder and overseas the entrance exam cohort.  Tom has been running educational groups for the past decade, and has created several bespoke learning games which he uses in his group classes.  Tom has found that group courses really drive attainment – possible due to the nature of the groups, which are supportive and provide guidance and reassurance, and possible as gameplay is incorporated, which helps to mitigate stress and makes learning fun.  Either way, it works!

Dr John Mitchell

With over 3,000 hours of tutor experience, an MSci Neuroscience from UCL, John is highly dedicated and specialises in teaching the sciences, maths, reasoning and interview preparation. As a young and eager academic, he couples an enthusiastic style of teaching with wider discussion beyond the syllabus to help students develop the critical faculties necessary to study and succeed in the sciences.

Emma Robson

Emma has been teaching since 2015, and has ten years’ experience in the industry.  She specialises in helping younger students pass entrance exams for academically competitive schools.  She has helped students to enter Bute House, Latymer Prep, St Paul’s Juniors, Westminster Under, KCS Junior School and Sussex House.

Our Cancellation Policy

If you cancel less than two weeks ahead of the start date of the course, the fee is non-refundable and non-transferable to another date or another student.

If you cancel outside of the two week course date, we will happily credit your account to attend a future course.

If you do not show up for a course, you are not eligible for a credit or refund.

Why we charge a cancellation fee

This is to cover the tutors’ reserved time to run a group course, to pay for their time spent pre-planning the class and relevant material, printing fees incurred and the loss of revenue to Winterwood as it is often too late to fill a cancelled space.  More importantly, other students miss out on attending a group.
