Course Introduction

This short, high-energy group is designed to help prepare students in year one for the format and expectation of entrance exams. The group will introduce attendees to this type of content, and help them build familiarity in a fun, informal way. Following the group, students should be able to begin working on entrance exam material in their own time, and they should recognise common questions and components of 7+ entrance exams.

Course Schedule

The group will be split over three days. Each will focus on a different subject area.

Day I – English – we will work on common 7+ English questions, for example information finding, vocabulary in context, and inference, learning how to explain our ideas.

Day II – Maths – we will focus on core 7+ topics, for example time, money, fractions, and questions involving missing operations.

Day III – Reasoning – we will look at common VR and NVR question types, and also work on puzzles and problem solving – common aspects of 7+ reasoning assessments.

The group will – as always – be supported by a lively learning game! Attendees will have the chance to earn points, and to win prizes. The group will be fun and engaging, and will finish with an optional assessment on the morning of Day IV, to assess progress. This assessment will be marked and reviewed by Dr Tom Parkinson.

“Excellent tutors. They helped my son get into his ideal school and gave him brilliant focussed help that really worked for him and not just in the short term. I would highly recommend!”

Group Leads

Dr Tom Parkinson

Tom is Winterwood’s co-founder and overseas the entrance exam cohort.  Tom has been running educational groups for the past decade, and has created several bespoke learning games which he uses in his group classes.  Tom has found that group courses really drive attainment – possible due to the nature of the groups, which are supportive and provide guidance and reassurance, and possible as gameplay is incorporated, which helps to mitigate stress and makes learning fun.  Either way, it works!

Our Cancellation Policy

If you cancel less than two weeks ahead of the start date of the course, the fee is non-refundable and non-transferable to another date or another student.

If you cancel outside of the two week course date, we will happily credit your account to attend a future course.

If you do not show up for a course, you are not eligible for a credit or refund.

Why we charge a cancellation fee

This is to cover the tutors’ reserved time to run a group course, to pay for their time spent pre-planning the class and relevant material, printing fees incurred and the loss of revenue to Winterwood as it is often too late to fill a cancelled space.  More importantly, other students miss out on attending a group.
