Course Introduction

Students starting year 5, September 2025

This short four-day course is designed to get students up to speed before the beginning of Year 5, a pivotal year for entrance exam preparation.

Most students will begin preparing for the 11+ in earnest from the beginning of Year 5, and this course is designed to help them prepare for the two major online Pretests – the ISEB and the Consortium Exam.

This course will be led by top entrance exam tutors, with years of experience preparing students for the ISEB and Consortium assessments.  As well as teaching core rules, they will work to identify topics and subjects to address in the coming months.

The course will cover all four subject areas – English, maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.  Full feedback will be given for each subject.

Course Schedule

  • On Day I – we will cover English.  We will review different types of texts, multiple choice comprehension, literary analysis and conclude with a short ISEB/Consortium format comprehension exercise, with a composition exercise designed to look ahead to written exams.
  • On Day II – we will cover Verbal Reasoning.  We will look at both quantitative and vocabulary-based verbal reasoning.  We will finish with a short exercise in CEM format, for the ISEB, Consortium exam and St Paul’s Girls’ and City of London Pretest.
  • On Day III – we will cover Non-Verbal Reasoning.  We will cover both 2D and 3D NVR, including difficult rules such as cube nets, counting cubes, and rotations of cubes.  We will finish with a comprehensive NVR assessment.
  • On Day IV – we will cover maths.  We will look at common entrance exam questions, involving data, geometry, time, money, measures and fractions.  WE will finish with an assessment in ISEB/Consortium format, including a maths puzzle section for the Consortium and second stage exams.

Our Cancellation Policy

If you cancel less than two weeks ahead of the start date of the course, the fee is non-refundable and non-transferable to another date or another student.

If you cancel outside of the two week course date, we will happily credit your account to attend a future course.

If you do not show up for a course, you are not eligible for a credit or refund.

Why we charge a cancellation fee

This is to cover the tutors’ reserved time to run a group course, to pay for their time spent pre-planning the class and relevant material, printing fees incurred and the loss of revenue to Winterwood as it is often too late to fill a cancelled space.  More importantly, other students miss out on attending a group.
